Statement of purpose: The Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance, Inc. provides emergency
care and transport of sick and / or injured persons within the geographic boundaries of
Southampton Village. Under mutual aid agreements, these services are also provided beyond the
village boundaries at the request of town, county, state, & / or federal agencies having such
jurisdiction.
About Us:
SVVA was founded in 1993. The department’s origin dates back to the 1950’s when it was
organized as a veteran’s of foreign wars ambulance club. Prior to this time, ambulance service
was provided by Southampton Hospital. 1994 marked certification by the state department of
health meeting the criteria of having a emergency medical technician on 100 percent of calls along with specified equipment. During 1997 the department came under the operational
supervision & direction of the Southampton Village government, and obtained status as a taxing
district for operational funding.
Currently the department operates two New York State Department of Health certified advanced life support (ALS) equipped ambulances, two ALS equipped certified first responder chief's vehicles (FRV), & one certified basic life support (BLS) equipped FRV. Ambulance unit 7-18-16 is a 2005 Wheeled Coach modified Ford Type III. Ambulance unit 7-18-17 is a 1997 Road Rescue modified Ford Type III. BLS-FRV unit 7-18-80 is a 2002 Ford Explorer 4WD. ALS-FRV chief's unit 7-18-31 is a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD and ALS-FRV chief's unit 7-18-31 is a 2000 Ford Expedition 4WD.
The department’s 100 percent volunteer staff consists of one New York State licensed EMT-cc,
11 EMT-b’s, two cpr instructors, and 10 driver-helpers. Several of our members are cross
certified with the Southampton Fire Dept as Firefighter I with additional training in surface water
rescue, ice rescue, heavy rescue, & emergency vehicle operations (EVOC, CEVO II). The
department averages 400 emergency calls per year yielding in excess of 2000 volunteer person hours.
Our primary destination hospital is Southampton Hospital. Operating within Suffolk County
Department of Health protocols we transport certain trauma, burn, or stroke patients to
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital or University Hospital at Stony Brook via ground ambulance or
Suffolk County Police Aviation Medivac helicopter.
Forms: Please contact the department directly to request membership application.
FAQ’s:
1) Do you charge for service? No we are a volunteer non-profit government entity that
operates by tax funding and donations. However, we provide only emergency treatment &
transport.
2) I want to get involved. How do I join as a volunteer? Contact the department for an
application and information about current openings.
3) Does it require a lot of time to be a volunteer? The department requires each member
to donate 1 weeknight per week for standby & 1 weekend night per month for standby.
Approximately 4 additional hours per month are required for meetings and training. Every
member must maintain CPR certification.
4) I’m not available at night. Can I still help? Definitely. If you are available to respond
5) to a significant number of daytime calls, no night commitment is required.
6) Do you have age requirements to volunteer? You must be at least 18 years of age, pass
a physical, possess a valid license to operate a passenger vehicle in New York State, &
pass a background check with no felony convictions. See http://town.southampton.ny.us/vlisting.ihtml?myid=9&id=2&cat=Volunteer%20Fire for
additional information on volunteer fire – ems programs townwide.
7) Why should I volunteer? Besides the sense of satisfaction from helping others we offer the following benefits:
Free medical training, annual basic physical, necessary vaccinations, scholarship
opportunities (for members and dependant children), social activities, retirement and
life insurance program, physical fitness program, related continuing education, &
performance incentive benefits. New members are also eligible for tuition assistance if
attending Suffolk County Community College. Members receiving paramedic training
at University Hospital at Stony Brook may be eligible for tuition reimbursement upon
successful completion of the program.
8) I can’t volunteer. But what can I do to help? Everyone can help by posting their
address visible at street side, keeping entry to your property and building clear for large
vehicles and equipment, yield vehicle right of way to ambulances displaying flashing lights
(and volunteers responding with a green flashing light). Additionally, use 911 for
emergencies only, follow the emergency phone operator’s instructions calmly. Learn CPR &
1st Aid. Follow common safety rules like biking with a helmet, swimming with a buddy,
having smoke & CO detectors, and fire extinguishers.
