Due to the recent heavy rains, it has become necessary for the Village of Southampton to open the Lake Agawam drain. The drain will be open beginning Thursday November 14 through Wednesday November 27. Signage will be posted along the cut as well as in the parking lot and along the beach. Village personnel will regularly monitor the flow. Stony Brook University has recently confirmed that Lake Agawam contains high levels of blue-green algae as of October 30, 2019 as indicated on the NYS DEC Harmful Algal Blooms Website. The public is advised to avoid all contact with the water near the discharge area as toxins contained within the algae may pose health risks. Dogs are especially vulnerable and should be kept on a leash well away from the discharge area. The beach will be closed in the designated area around the opening and individuals are advised to not enter the water. Pending weather and ocean conditions may affect adjacent beach areas as well.
